G&L F100 Series 1 from 1980.

This was the first production model G&L guitar from Leo Fender and George Fullertons' new company in 1980

Maple neck and fingerboard with a 12" radius ( Series 1). Series 2 had a 7.25" radius. Mahogany body, possibly one piece, I can't see a join on the body, in three tone sunburst.

G&L Dual Fulcrum trem and G&Ls own MFD humbuckers. These pickups are hot hot hot ! Tone controls are the G&L PTB with a master volume, bass and treble. The mini switches are for coil tap, the red one, and out of phase, the black one.

The neck one this one is ultra slim, probably the thinnest neck I've ever played. I got this one about six months ago, it had recently had a refret and the tuners have been changed to locking Sperzels. For a thirty year old guitar it's still going strong, it has plenty of dings and scratches on the body. The electronics are still working fine and the humbucking MFDs are really powerful, it easily overloads the clean channel on the Super Champ XD.

Thanks guys, this one is certainly a bit different. The headstock is the original G&L design, it was their first production model after the company was founded in 1980. It's sometimes known as the "lawsuit" headstock as it was changed due to a legal issue with Fender ( as if it looks like a Fender Strat headstock at all ! ).

The pickups are humbucking versions of G&Ls single coil MFD pickups. Very powerful, lots of output, loads of bass and treble. Probably best to run this one with all the controls at 7, but I just leave them at 10  :ok:

I've been using it mostly through a Super Champ XD, it sounds very good with it. The Blues Jnr looks a bit more 8) in the photos !

G&L had a recent version of the F100 called the F100 Return Edition, with similar pickups but a different headstock and rear mounted controls. The body shape was also different. I think I prefer the original one.

Argh, I didn't see it yet, I love these early G&L, we could consider that's the real Fender natural evolution...
So how many G&L now in your collection?

Hi, the F100 is a beast, it doesn't sound like a Strat or a Tele or even a Les Paul. The pickups are high output, they make a Dunan JB seem tame in comparison. At the moment I have 22 G&Ls, yes I know that's nuts, , there are a couple I have not posted yet as I have no pics or very bad ones.

I was told when I bought this F100 that it was an 1980 model. I was curious as it was the 35th Anniversary of G&L in the last couple of weeks so I messaged G&L on facebook asking about the manufacture date of the guitar.
----------------------------------------

Me: Is it possible to get a manufacture date on my lefty F100, I was told it was an 1980 when I bought it. Thanks

G&L: I can look in the old log book when I get back in town. Should be early next week. Love those early F-100s. Dave

G&L: Came back early and found the entry for your guitar. G001459 shows F-100 I (roman numeral 1) LH (left hand) W/V (with vibrato) MP (maple) SUNB (Sunburst) completed October 28, 1981.

----------------------------------------

So it turns out it is an 1981 guitar.

I think "Dave" may be Dave McClaren, boss of G&L. How cool is that !

Cool guitar, I wish they could have kept the headstock that way...
